Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen

Last Summer a friend of mine and I hiked through the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen. The dune area is a protected nature reserve and also helps supply drinking water for the city of Amsterdam.

Last time we attempted to hike there, there was a huge storm and it wouldn’t have been safe to go and hike (apparently they had even given off a weather alarm). Instead, we chatted for hours in a nearby pancake place. When we decided it was time for us to head back home, all buses had been cancelled and it was total chaos. It took forever to get home and we were quite wet and cold!

This time, the sun was out, it was an absolutely beautiful day which made it so nice to get out there and hike. During our hike we saw quite a few deer, which I thought was awesome. In the distance you could even see the local town of Zandvoort. This is definitely an area I’d love to return to for a nice hike out in nature!

  1. What a stunningly beautiful spot. I visited Amsterdam a few years ago but saw mostly city and some small parks. This looks to be a real gem – something to visit if I’m lucky enough to go back again.

    1. Definitely recommend going! 🙂 And I love how this area is relatively close to the city (maybe under an hour?). I love Amsterdam and I know many travellers go especially for the city, but I always love it when someone is excited to see other places as well. Thanks for stopping by, Todd!

      1. Thanks! This looks like one of my favourite types of places to visit: There are places tourists visit, and then there are the places people who live in an area go that make them love where they live. This looks like the latter sort – and those are often the most interesting places to go. Thanks for sharing it!

        1. Exactly! You might also like the area around Hilversum then. Great area to hike through fields of heather. And you’re welcome!

    1. It’s a very lovely area indeed! Hiking out the first time just wouldn’t have been safe. But it would be interesting to hike there in various seasons for sure!

  2. Such fond memories of both our adventures, although the stormy one above all in hindsight. 😉
    Excellent photography as always! XOXO
