January 2012, day two of the Routeburn Track. I’d been tramping for a few hours, passed the highest point of the trek and seen the most amazing views that made me go ‘wow, I am here to see it!’ It was time to head down to Lake McKenzie Hut, where I would stay the second night. You can see the hut on the right of the photo. I loved looking at the lake from above. It gave perspective knowing how high up I was. The trail went downhill and my poor knee was having a rough time. I took it slow and made little progress. The Fantastic Four I mentioned in this post, helped me down by carrying my pack and lending me bandages. Once down, we settled in and went to the lake. It felt so good cooling my tired muscles (that honestly didn’t know what hit them, lol) in the clear cold water. Despite my knee, I was enjoying myself immensely. Immersed in nature felt so good, I can’t really describe it any other way. 🙂
