Here’s a photo from when I was an intern at an archaeological excavation in the north of Oss, in the area called Horzak. You can see the big refuse piles to the right and a track through the grass on the left. I love the contrast between the green and the orangy-brown sandy soil.
The uni I attended had been excavating in Oss Horzak for ten years, so as an archaeology student it was a great opportunity to play a small role in this big research. The time period was mostly Bronze Age. What I loved about this particular dig is that you could do a lot of documenting yourself, not just dig holes (yes, there’s more to excavating than digging holes). What I didn’t love about this dig was having to share a house with 15 other people and one bathroom…

I’m a history buff, so it’s something that’d be very interesting. I can imagine it’s terribly exciting to locate a find. 😃

Yes, it is! It’s really awesome finding a piece of flint ages about half a million years old and still being razor sharp. Or a cook pot from the 12th century. Or post holes from a Bronze Age farm house. Less awesome: one excavation we even found remains of manure from the Middle Ages in a layer and it still smelled like sh*t, literally! 😀 Mostly, people don’t realise it’s hard labour and have this dreamy image in their heads…yeahnah…not quite! But it is fascinating to fantasise about what life could have been there all those years ago!

Hahaha! Can’t believe the manure still smelled after all those years! The work part wouldn’t scare me. I’ve always enjoyed playing in the dirt. Instead of archeology though, I bought a farm. We’ve found artifacts in our fields too. Native American arrowheads! They’re always cool to find. 😃

Not exactly. In our area, it could be Shawnee or Cherokee. It’s always cool when one appears. 😃
