Kefalonia Island Tour

During my recent trip to Kefalonia to attend my dear friend’s wedding, I of course wanted to see something of the island as well! I booked an island tour, which ended up being a wonderful day with a knowledgeable guide and plenty of things to see! Here are some pictures of that day in the order of visiting.

Myrtos beach

We didn’t go down to the actual beach, but could still enjoy its beauty from our look-out point. Myrtos beach is probably one of the most photographed beaches in Europe and often used in advertising, even though more often than not for destinations outside of Kefalonia.

Fiskardo

We had a quick stop in Fiskardo, in the north of Kefalonia. Beautiful.

Assos

We didn’t go down to Assos but were able to enjoy the view from up the road.

Agia Efimia

Another fishing village and the place where we had lunch in a local taverne (and where I had way too salty risotto!). It was here that Captain Corelli’s Mandolin was filmed. I haven’t seen the movie myself, but thought I’d share that bit of info anyway.

Melissani Lake

This was so incredibly beautiful and the one thing on the island that I really wanted to see! The water was crazy blue and crazy clear, fantastic! We went into the cave a bit and it was so nice and cool. Definitely a highlight for me!

Drogarati Cave

An uexpected gem (at least for me) was Drogarati Cave, with stalagmites and stalactites of over 15 million years! One centimeter takes 100 years, incredible! It was blissfully cool in the cave, which was an added bonus. Also definitely a highlight and worth a visit.

Cephalonia Robola Wine Cooperative

And then it was time to go to Cephalonia Robola Wine Cooperative. We had a tour around the facility and then enjoyed some wine tasting. I think we tried five or six wines, of which my two favourites are pictured below (my favourite is the one on the right, so good!).

Moni Agiou Gerasimou 

After the wine tasting we went to the monastery of Saint Gerasimos. Apparently, my shorts and those of another woman were considered too short (above the knee), so we had to cover up. I don’t necessarily mind that, because it’s a matter of showing respect. I was annoyed, however, that another woman in our group who also had shorts on above the knee and even had a sleeveless top on (I had a short sleeved t-shirt on), didn’t have to cover up. Seemed a bit random, which irked me.

The Greek orthodox family on our tour (grandmother, mother, son) were able to see the remains of Saint Gerasimos, which are kept in the monastery. The son also crawled into the cave underneath the monastery where Saint Gerasimos stayed to pray, and came back enriched by the experience. His grandmother and mother were so proud of him. Good for him!

All in all a great day with heaps of new impressions to take home!
