Dreaming of a white Christmas

Here is a photo I took a few years ago, when we had a cold Winter with lots and lots of snow (by Dutch standards). While I’m a bit of a wuss when it comes to freezing temperatures (in the Netherlands it always gets water cold), I do love a sunny, cold and crisp Winter’s day. For me, the best way to spend such a day is to go for a hike in the forest or on the beach (if it’s not too windy), return home for a cup of tea and have a good ‘ol Dutch mash for dinner.

Such a contrast with last year and this year. It’s supposed to be Winter, but it feels like Autumn. We’ve had mild December months (or mild Winters in general) before, but I still find it crazy to realise that we’re having such high temperatures (10 to 13C) in a time where it’s supposed to be much colder (-4 to 5C). I remember building snowmans as a kid, sledding/tobogganing down the snowy slopes of our local creek and ice skating on natural ice.

Yesterday, I walked all the way downtown and enjoyed a sunny, mild afternoon. I had my lunch sitting outside on a bench. It’s sunny outside today as well. I’m putting my Winter coat back in the closet and taking out my thinner coat. I’m still expecting at least some snow, but not until January. Last year, it started snowing on January 29th, the exact day I flew to New Zealand.

I’m not the biggest fan of snow in the sense that public transport just gets completely messed up. Busses are generally dependable, so that’s good. Though, it’s as if every year the Dutch railway forget how to deal with snowy conditions and everything turns to chaos. We’ll see how it goes this time…

For some reason still, snow around this time of year makes it extra Christmassy for me. So by lack of snow at the moment, I thought I’d share a snowy/icy picture. 🙂

    1. Thank you! And just a regular creek in my hometown. 🙂 I love how all those branches have a coating of ice and snow. And a water scene is always a plus for me. Merry days!

  3. We’re just as bad as you guys at ‘managing’ snow, while my Polish relatives think nothing of putting on the snow chains and off they go. 🙂 I hate being cold and we’ve not had much sunshine so I’m only partly happy. Merry Christmas to you! I’m good to go 🙂

    1. We just don’t know how to deal with snow, do we? 😛 My friends in Sweden don’t even flinch when it snows, while over here the slightest snowfall throws the country into chaos, haha. Happy holidays!

    1. Wow, that does sound perfect for a Christmas day! I remember my Christmas in Perth: it was 35 degrees C, we were a group with 14 nationalities and we spent Christmas barbecuing in the park! 🙂
