The Lord of the Rings is a series of movies I’ve utterly enjoyed. Same goes for The Hobbit movies, though I have yet to see the latest film. The whole country of New Zealand is like a film decor. One stunning bit of nature after another, one place even more scenic than the next. I wanted to do a ‘LOTR locations tour’ but was very selective in picking out which one. One simply cannot see all the locations at once and those tours are terribly expensive (aka overpriced). I decided on a half-day tour leaving from Queenstown. What won me over was the fact that we were driving off in a 4WD Landrover and would visit places a normal car or bus wouldn’t be able to reach. You see, I’m not the person for combing out every inch of possible filming location (only few of the pictures posted below were actual filming locations). Rather, I wanted to get a bit of the LOTR vibe and New Zealand remoteness. If anything, exact filming location or not, I got to go to amazing places and lookouts, crossed a river with the car and I’ve seen many amazing views. Sort of a two-for-one deal really! That’s what I was after for this tour and it was surely worth it!

  1. What stunning views! The Hobbit and LOTR has been a firm favourite with our boys over the years. With that scenery, it’s no surprise New Zealand was chosen for the film locations – and I can imagine that is a nice little money spinner for tourism in New Zealand now! 🙂

    1. They were! 🙂 Awesome, they are great movies! I love them too and should really go and see the latest Hobbit movie. The movies definetly generate a lot of income, for sure! But travelling through NZ I realised you don’t need tours per se, as just looking around and taking in the stunning scenery is amazing and fulfilling by itself! 🙂

      1. Oh yes, I can imagine the tours are not absolutely necessary – people can just take themselves to see these amazing landscapes, as you have done. It really is a beautiful place – I am not surprised you love it so much 🙂
